The star of the 2023-2024 Jeonggwanjang Professional Basketball Association was the Busan KCC. Despite having a large number of national team members including Heo Woong, Choi Jun-yong, Song Kyo-chang, Lee Seung-hyun, and Ra Gun-ah, the team ranked fifth in the regular season but transformed itself into a completely different team in the playoffs. It easily overpowered the Seoul SK Wyverns in the semifinal playoff, and beat its rival Wonju DB, the top-ranked team in the regular season. In the championship game, it beat the Suwon KT with four wins and one loss, and won the title for the first time in 13 years since the 2010-2011 season.
KCC will play as a representative of the KBL at the FIBA Asia Basketball Champions League, which is scheduled to be held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates from June 9-15. As its name implies, it will determine the strongest team in Asia. It was the FIBA Asia Champions Cup until last year, but the name changed from this year. From 2020 to 2022, the competition was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Last year, the venue was set to be Iraq, but the event was not held because it was a country where travel is prohibited.
A total of eight teams will participate in the upcoming Asian Champions League. Winners from the Chinese, Japanese, and Philippine leagues will be qualified to play. As the league is not over yet, no specific team has been decided. The NS Matrix for Felita Jaya and Malecisa of Indonesia went through preliminary rounds. The two teams that ranked first and second in the ongoing FIBA WASL can also play in the Asian Champions League.
However, KCC is worried a lot. Because the competition will be held a month after the end of the season, there is not much time to prepare. On the 15th, a fan meeting is scheduled to commemorate the victory at Busan Sajik Gymnasium. In order to properly hold the competition, the team must resume training immediately without a break. It has not been decided yet when the team will begin training.
A KCC official said, "We haven't decided yet when we will gather for training. We have a reception today (on the 10th), and a championship event is scheduled in Busan next week. Time is very tight. I am worried because some players are injured. We may not have the same performance as the championship game. I think it would have been better in May, but it is very ambiguous as we are having a competition after a month."
On top of that, the foreign player issue is another one. Ra Gun-ah's three-year contract with KCC ended at the end of this season, and she needs to reorganize her status through the KBL board of directors. Alize DeShawn Johnson has already departed for the U.S. For now, chances are high that she will find a new foreign player who can play a short-term part-time job. If this happens, she will naturally not be able to display performance that she displayed at the championship match.
A KCC source said, "Johnson has already left the country, and we don't know what will happen to (D) Geon-ah. To stage a competition, we need to have two foreign players. I think we need to find a short-term part-time job like (Anyang) Jeonggwanjang who participated in the Jones Cup last year. I have a headache. Still, I will do my best to prepare for the competition as I represent my country."
